The UK currently has the lowest percentage of female engineers in the whole of Europe, statistics show that only 12% of the all the Engineers in the country are women. This trend is unlikely to improve in the short term with female engineer apprentice numbers at a low.
for many years has recruited and trained apprentice engineers from the local area but had struggled to recruit any female engineers. That was until Samantha Troop joined the team of administration staff.
Working closely with our team of engineers Sam quickly picked up a good base of technical knowledge and showed an interest in joining some of the engineers on jobs.
After shadowing some of the engineers and completing several years of training Sam was recently assessed to see if she was ready to go it alone.
Sam passed with flying colours and is now Lincoln Security’s first female electronic security engineer!
In-between jobs we managed to track Sam down and asked her thoughts on how women are represented in the engineering sector and what motivated her to become and engineer, she said
“I feel that women underrepresented in the industry, I feel that it’s a very male led sector with little public support and encouragement for women, I think that more inspiration for children at school level could help to boost the number of women interested in careers in engineering.
The motivation for becoming an engineer came after working with the admin team and learning the processes behind that side, I wanted to find out more about the technical installation of intruder alarms so I asked about joining the team of engineers. Moving forward I want to continue training and have been a awarded a grant to complete a TAVCOM course to broaden my knowledge of intruder alarm systems.”
Julie Froggatt, Lincoln Security’s Installation Director said:
“We are very proud of Sam. She expressed an interest in moving onto the tools during her appraisal when her apprenticeship in Business Admin ended.We decided to support her in her quest to become an Installation and Service Engineer for the Intruder, CCTV and Fire sector of the business.
The whole team have given her great encouragement along the way. We are able to offer our customers the services of a female engineer which may be preferable to some of our valued customers and also, we can bring Sam back into the office to deal with technical issues on the telephone when required. It was a great move for Sam and also for the business.
The security industry is very male orientated so it’s another step forward in the right direction for us girls to demonstrate our never-ending multitude of superskills!”
Lincoln Security are proud to support Sam’s training and were proud to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day on June 23rd 2019 and to raise the profile of women in engineering.
