GAINSBOROUGH STUDENTS GAIN SCAFFOLDING EXPERIENCE

After the success of their first visit in 2017 Rilmac Scaffolding were pleased to be able to welcome a party from Gainsborough Careers College to their Lincoln yard.  The aim of the visit was to help students gain scaffolding experience as part of their construction course.  Most of the students are working in such areas as joinery or bricklaying, and it is quite likely that they will be involved in the use of scaffolding throughout their careers.

In order to give a more rounded view of the industry the students were given a short lecture in the theory and practices of scaffolding.  This was followed by a practical session where the youngsters got their hands dirty putting up some basic scaffolding.  The practical session also included a trip round the yard and an introduction to the tools and safety equipment.

“Opportunities like this are invaluable.” said Simon Quincy tutor at Gainsborough College. “Allowing students to see the wider construction industry away from the classroom opens a world of opportunity for them.  It is not often that students gain scaffolding experience in such a useful and practical way.”

“There is a skills shortage across the whole construction industry,” said Roger Woodlock, Design and Estimation Manager at Rilmac, “and if we can get students interested now, through the college, apprenticeships, and our own in-house training they have an opportunity for a long, useful and worthwhile career.”
