Stokes Tea & Coffee- Female Empowerment Takes the Spotlight at The Blue Room

FEMALE EMPOWERMENT TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT THE BLUE ROOM

The Historic Blue Room hosted an all-female line up with the Women in the Arts (WITA) showcase to champion creative women in Lincoln.

The showcase took place at The Blue Room on Sunday 22 July and featured an impressive line up of comedy, poetry readings, acoustic sets and more. The event was opened by local MP Karen Lee, to highlight the importance of female empowerment within the arts.

Women in the Arts is an organisation which works to support, connect and empower women creatives of all practices in Lincolnshire. It was created by Gemma Baker and Sarah Hughes last year and this event marks WITA’s second major showcase.

Gemma said: “WITA is a real celebration of Lincolnshire women performers and artists. We're bowled over by the number of talented women in the county, and the showcase gives us the platform to shout about them.

“Money raised at the event enables us to put on free networking events, and subsidised workshops, as well as our day to day support and promotion within the community”

The showcase was hosted at The Blue Room Lincoln, located at The Lawn, and Steve Gillard, theatre director at The Blue Room, is thrilled to be involved. He said: “WITA champions an underrepresented but hugely influential group – women. The organisation wants to influence change within the arts community and with events such as the showcase they are really able to create an impact.

“Thanks to events like this the arts and theatre scene in Lincoln is really starting to transform. There are a lot of historic venues championing traditional theatre however there is also a definite shift in attitude towards up and coming artistic styles.

“More people, like Gemma and Sarah, are staying in Lincoln and building up the theatre scene rather than leaving for London or Manchester which can only be a positive for the city. The first WITA showcase was incredibly successful and this one is just as if not even more popular.”
