Public urged to give feedback on planning application in Spilsby

Residents are being asked to have their say on ambitious plans for a new doctors’ surgery in the market town of Spilsby.

The GP partners at Spilsby Surgery say the new £3.3m practice they want to build will give local people access to more doctors and healthcare specialists, offering a wider range of services.

A public planning consultation urging people in the community to give their views online has now been launched by healthcare property specialists Primary Health Properties Plc, which is representing the practice.

This consultation is on the planning process and is not a formal public consultation to gather patients’ views, which will start in the new year.

East Lindsey District Council identified the need for a new doctors’ surgery in its 2018 Local Plan and land to the east of Spilsby has been earmarked, alongside a new housing development of 600 homes.

Developers have said the proposals for the site – stretching along the eastern boundary of Spilsby between Ashby Road to the north and Halton Road to the south – will be “transformative” for the area’s economic future.

The existing Spilsby Surgery, which has nearly 7,500 registered patients, opened in the early 1980s on Simpson Street in the town centre but the practice has now outgrown the premises.

It is proposed that the existing site will be closed and all services transferred to a new building – which will be substantially larger in size – if the scheme receives the Clinical Commissioning Group and council’s go-ahead.

The proposed move would mean the surgery could accommodate more clinical and support staff, who will cater for existing patients as well as those from the new housing development. The area would also allow for future expansion if needed.

Practice manager Jason Longstaff said: “This development will not only allow us to offer services to more patients with a bigger clinical and administrative team but the possibility of expanding these services to facilitate further training opportunities as well as visiting screening services is hugely exciting.

“It will provide a fantastic, life-changing opportunity for our growing community and those who work within it.”

NHS Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has approved an outline business case. This means that the practice is now able to seek the views of its patients and the public on these proposals. The Covid-19 pandemic means that a face-to-face consultation event cannot be considered.

The results will be reported back into the CCG for its consideration in the final decision-making process.

Spilsby Practice is committed to involving patients in what is important when accessing primary care services and will be welcoming feedback around the proposed move through its own consultation, which commences in the new year.

“A new surgery has been planned for Spilsby for more than 15 years but has not yet come to fruition,” added Jason. “We are hugely excited about the prospect of being able to deliver 21st century healthcare in a surgery that has been developed and designed with the future in mind for Spilsby.”

Those wanting to have a say on the planning application should visit www.spilsburysurgery.co.uk before January 2.
