Navigating Product Risk: Specialist Joins Hegarty to Support Manufacturers

The region’s appliance manufacturing sector has a new legal ally, as Hegarty appoints Abdul Basit to its litigation team as a specialist in consumer and product liability law. With more than a decade of experience supporting global brands, Basit advises manufacturers and retailers on navigating consumer protection legislation, managing product-related disputes, and responding to regulatory investigations. His work spans issues ranging from water leaks caused by washing machines to electrical faults in ovens and fires linked to tumble dryers, all areas where legal, financial and reputational risks can quickly escalate. “Product-related claims are an increasing reality for manufacturers operating in a highly regulated and fast-moving market,” says Basit. “Even compliant products can fail, and no business is immune from scrutiny. My role is to work alongside manufacturers and retailers as a strategic advisor, helping them strengthen compliance frameworks, manage risk effectively, and respond confidently when issues arise.” With experience representing both consumers and businesses, Basit brings a balanced and commercially focused perspective to product liability. He has experience working with manufacturers and suppliers on matters such as warranty structures, regulatory compliance, supplier agreements, dispute resolution, and engagement with enforcement bodies. “The goal isn’t simply to defend claims,” he adds. “It’s to guide businesses through an evolving regulatory landscape, helping them make informed decisions that protect their brand and support long-term growth.” Basit is also keen to collaborate with industry groups, quality managers and compliance officers across the region, providing practical legal insight tailored to the appliance sector. His appointment marks a strategic expansion for Hegarty, one of the region’s largest legal firms, with offices in Peterborough, Bourne, Stamford, Oakham and Market Deeping. Hegarty, founded in 1974, provides legal services across property, family, probate, dispute resolution and corporate law, with a strong focus on supporting businesses and local communities throughout the region.
