Woman swims across Lake Windermere to raise money for LIVES

An open water swimmer from North Hykeham took on a phenomenal challenge of swimming the entire length of England’s biggest lake to raise funds for emergency response charity LIVES.

Suzy Hegg pushed herself to the limit by completing the 10.5 miles open-water swim around Lake Windermere, raising over £580.

With the help of a swimming coach Paul, Suzy spent her time training at Activities Away in North Hykeham for the mammoth swim, which took her five hours and 45 minutes to complete.

She said: “I started my swim at 7.30am. It was so quiet with no one else at the lake at that time. The weather was dull, but Windermere was flat and calm, perfect for the swim.

“I’d been diagnosed with seasonal asthma the week before and was really struggling with a persistent cough. A kilometre or so in, I thought ‘you’re not going to make this’, but my breathing got better, and I could concentrate on the challenge.”

Throughout the challenge, the dedicated swimmer was able to refuel with food and water on board a support boat. Towards the end of the swim, Suzy was joined in the water by her friend Louise, who helped to keep spirits up as they approached the finish line.

Suzy decided to take on the tough challenge on behalf of LIVES after her father suffered a heart attack. Following the 999 call, a LIVES First Responder arrived in just six minutes, giving him the very best chance of survival.

She added: “I also know a LIVES Responder, Pippa Crust. I’ve heard how she is supporting her community with the training and equipment from LIVES.”

LIVES needs to fundraise £1.4million every year to train, equip and support their volunteers who are attending 999 calls across the county. LIVES responders are called to a variety of emergencies including cardiac arrests, sporting accidents and road traffic collisions.

All of LIVES First Responders are volunteers, who give their own time to help save lives. You can donate to Suzy’s JustGiving page here.
