Walk and Bike Month 2025

Walk and Bike Month 2025

What is Active Lincolnshire?

Since it was founded in 2004, local charity Active Lincolnshire has evolved from a sports partnership to an active partnership dedicated to helping improve the lives of Lincolnshire residents by advocating for the positive power of physical activity.

They deliver the Let’s Move Lincolnshire initiative, the county wide strategy for physical activity, that invites everyone to work together to help get our county active, and make physical activity and sport a part of everyone’s life, regardless of age or background

What are the benefits of being more active?

In today’s fast-paced, desk-bound world, physical activity is often one of the first things to fall off our priority list. However, maintaining an active lifestyle is important for both physical health and mental wellbeing.

Physical activity also has measurable benefits in the workplace. Regular movement can lead to happier, healthier, more productive teams.

Benefits of an Active Workforce

Creating a culture that encourages movement and activity during the workday has incredible ripple effects, including:

Reduced stress levels and lower risk of depression, contributing to a healthier workforce.

Improved employee engagement, morale, and job satisfaction, which can enhance company culture.

Enhanced productivity, thanks to improved focus, energy levels, and cognitive performance.

Fewer workdays lost to stress and musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in sedentary roles.

Meeting Physical Activity Guidelines

The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, equivalent to about 20 to 30 minutes per day. Moderate-intensity activities include brisk walking, cycling, or similar exercises that raise the heart rate and induce mild sweating.

Alternatively, 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, such as running or high-impact sport, can provide the same health benefits in half the time.

How can employers support their staff in being more active?

Supporting an active workforce isn't just about gym memberships or fitness challenges - it often requires a shift in workplace culture. The key lies in embedding movement into the everyday routine of work life.

Here's some tips on how you can begin to cultivate healthier, more energised teams.

Listen First

Start by understanding your employees' needs. A workplace wellbeing survey or regular one-on-one check-ins can offer valuable insights into the kinds of support that would make a real difference

Make Movement Part of the Day

Encouraging daily movement doesn’t need to be disruptive. Promote small, sustainable habits such as lunchtime walks, stretch breaks, or ‘walk and talk’ meetings.

Consider appointing a dedicated wellbeing lead and developing a clear wellbeing policy or action plan. Leadership plays a critical role—when senior managers model active behaviours, others are more likely to follow.

Shape an Active Workplace Environment

Creating an environment that supports movement can be transformative. Depending on your workspace you could try:

Supporting active commutes: Offer secure bike storage, showers, or join the Cycle to Work scheme. By encouraging active travel you’ll also be helping to reduce carbon emissions.

Encourage movement in meetings: Add stretch breaks or take discussions on the move.

Join a local campaign such as Love to Ride’s Bike month – which is encouraging workplaces to rise up the local leaderboards for every staff member that cycles 5 miles during May. Or celebrate National Walking Month with a team steps challenge, arranging some lunchtime walks, or organising a social stroll or bike ride outside of work hours.
