Ongo’s East Common Lane development wins national award

Ongo’s East Common Lane development in Scunthorpe has been named Winner of the Best Small Social Housing Development at this year’s LABC Building Excellence Awards.   Hosted in London, the event brought together more than 800 professionals from across England and Wales to celebrate high‑quality, sustainable building projects that demonstrate excellence in technical standards, compliance and community impact.   The award‑winning project delivered 28 high‑quality, affordable bungalows on the site of the former Brumby Resource Centre, designed with sustainability, accessibility and the existing natural environment at its core.   The development retained mature protected trees and added new planting to boost biodiversity. Several homes were built to the M4(3) wheelchair‑accessible standard, ensuring excellent accessibility for residents. It also followed Secured by Design principles to enhance safety.   A fabric‑first build approach and PV solar panels helped the homes exceed energy‑efficiency requirements and support Ongo’s sustainability goals.   The judges described East Common Lane as “a development that sets a benchmark for small‑scale social housing, combining thoughtful layout planning, strong stakeholder engagement and rigorous technical coordination.”   Georgie McGuire, Development Project Manager at Ongo, said: “It’s an absolute honour for our East Common Lane development to be recognised on a national stage, and a real career highlight for me.   “The demand for high‑quality, accessible homes in our area is exceptionally high, so we’re very proud of what has been achieved here, not only in terms of design and sustainability, but the positive impact these homes will have on the lives of local people.”   This successful project was delivered through partnership working with Ongo, BSB Architecture, GS Kelsey Construction, and North Lincolnshire Council Building Control, whose early engagement, regular inspections and technical expertise helped ensure compliance and overcome challenges such as overheating risks and working sensitively around mature trees.   To find out more about Ongo, their services or developments, follow them on social media or head to their website: www.ongo.co.uk.
