Ongo homes receive highest Police award for safe design

An Ongo development on Cottage Beck and Rowland Road, Scunthorpe has received a gold Secured by Design award for its crime prevention measures.

Secured by Design (SBD) awards are the official UK Police flagship initiative combining the principles of designing out crime with physical security, and have three levels (bronze, silver and gold).

The Ongo development includes 32 homes and was recognised for security features including appropriate lighting, fencing, car parking and its specially devised layout to reduce anti-social behaviour.

Martin Phillips, Development Manager at Ongo said: “This is a huge achievement for all agencies involved, and we’re absolutely delighted to have achieved gold standard.

“It has been great to plan every detail of the scheme, see it come to life and new tenants move in. Above all it’s a celebration for them, as they can be proud of their home and enjoy the features it includes.”

In order to achieve the top level, Ongo collaborated with Humberside Police, who advised on crime prevention through environmental design measures, BSB Architecture who drew up plans and contractors G.S. Kelsey who built the development.

Matthew Robinson, Director at GS Kelsey Ltd commented: “We hope this is the first award of many for this particular development. The project team have an excellent record when it comes to housing design and construction, having completed the work on Albert Marsden Court just last year.

“Those lucky enough to move into these homes are going to have a safe place to live in an area that will thrive following the investment from Ongo Homes.”

Following a strict assessment and evaluation process in November by Humberside Police, the scheme was determined as the highest possible standard.

When asked about the assessment Tracy Rokahr, Humberside Police Designing out Crime Officer, said: “I was delighted to get involved in this development, working alongside some fantastic local partners.

“By working together we included Secured by Design features and other security measures for each home, including Police Preferred Specification windows and doors.

“I’m extremely proud to present Ongo Homes with a very well deserved Secured by Design gold award and hope to work with them in the future.”
