Councils Partnership Councils approve the Climate Change Strategy

The Climate Change Strategy for the South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership sub-region has now been approved by all three Councils – Boston Borough Council, East Lindsey District Council and South Holland District Council.

The Climate Change Strategy, which went out to public consultation in November 2021, provides a framework to support our local communities to reduce their environmental impact as we all work together to meet the shared net-zero target set by the UK Government.

The Strategy sets out a Strategic Action Plan which focuses on the key areas of Innovation, Education and People and includes the key themes of; transport, built environment, energy/ renewables, business, agriculture/ food, water resources, nature-based solutions and the visitor economy.

A more detailed Delivery Plan will be established by the South & East Lincolnshire Climate Action Network (SELCAN) which is being newly-formed to help bring together private, public and community sectors to jointly tackle climate change.

The Strategy is heavily focused on mitigation and its actions to reduce greenhouse gases across the sub-region. This is important for Boston, East Lindsey and South Holland as the Strategy is the key driving force to ensuring a more sustainable future for our communities.

It will also help to provide support and education to communities so that they are able to adapt to the impacts of Climate Change and to address both the challenges and the opportunities it presents.

Some of the Actions outlined in the Strategy’s Action Plan include exploring decarbonising public transport, promoting agile working to reduce regular commuting, support to residents in accessing available funding to improve their energy efficiency and to reduce fuel poverty and promote uptake of new technologies in the farming industry.

In line with the Strategy, the Partnership is reviewing its own services to identify how it can reduce its own carbon footprint and it’s use of fossil fuels by working collaboratively on carbon reduction plans and putting in place shared environment policies throughout the authorities.

A joint statement from Councillor Paul Skinner Leader of Boston Borough Council, Councillor Craig Leyland, Leader of East Lindsey District Council, and Councillor Gary Porter, Leader of South Holland District Council said:

“Approval of the Partnership’s Climate Change Strategy is the first step in ensuring a sustainable future for our communities and delivering a plan that we can all contribute to meet the Government’s net zero target and reduce the carbon emissions across the sub-region.”

“We are delighted that the Strategy has been approved and we now look forward to working with our communities, local businesses and partners to ensure that every action we take works in line with our joint goal to tackle climate change.”

“As part of the Partnerships ongoing work to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty, we are delivering the Sustainable Warmth Programme across Boston, East Lindsey and South Holland and would like to remind those to apply if they are eligible for the scheme.”
