Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) has announced that their proposal to change the institution’s name to Lincoln Bishop University has been formally approved by the Office for Studies (OfS).
This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the University as it commences consultation on a five-year, forward-looking strategy.
Becoming Lincoln Bishop University reflects the University’s location and its deep connection with the historic city of Lincoln and the Greater Lincolnshire region.
Secondly, it reflects the University’s values, inspired by its distinctive Church of England foundation and membership of the Cathedrals Group of universities, and its positive impact within the many communities it serves.
Thirdly, the change to Lincoln Bishop underscores the University’s pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and knowledge exchange, with a commitment to bringing people and organisations together through transformative education and professional partnerships.
The University has an established reputation for the quality of the student experience, recognised by national accolades including being ranked first for teaching quality in the UK (The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025).
Vice Chancellor, Professor Andrew Gower, said: “As an institution founded in 1862, we are proud to be embarking on this next chapter in our history.
“We look forward to continuing to work in collaboration with all our valued partners, as we plan the strategy to be launched next academic year, putting Lincoln Bishop University firmly on the map.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank students, staff and our many stakeholders for all we will achieve together.”
The name Lincoln Bishop University will be formally adopted by the institution from September 2025 coinciding with the start of academic year 2025/2026.
