Read MoreBransby Horses is proud to be one of 50 animal welfare organisations joining forces to urge the UK government to redefine our relationship with animals through a collaborative animal health and welfare strategy.
The Act Now For Animals report details 40 recommendations covering farmed animals, wildlife and companion animals, including horses, donkeys, ponies and mules.
This ‘once in a generation’ opportunity includes the suggested adoption of the following equine welfare recommendations:
– Ensuring that equine identification legislation is enforced and make both the owner and the keeper responsible for keeping the Government’s digital equine database up to date. This will ensure information held about equines is accurate linking the owner to the horse.
– Maximum journey time of 12 hours for all equines being transported.
– Review of existing fireworks legislation and their impact on animal welfare, with a view to introducing further restrictions on their use and sale.
– Introduce licencing and inspections of sanctuaries and rescue centres in England and Wales (relating to Britain’s Horse Problem report).
– Introduction of animal welfare into the national curriculum- increasing understanding of our next generation.
The animal welfare coalition hopes that the collaboration will further amplify their voices on behalf of animals at such a crucial time following the UK’s exit from the EU, providing the biggest opportunity for societal change in a generation.
Bransby Horses’ Executive Director of Equine Welfare, Emma Carter, said, “By adding our name to this report, we stand united with the animal welfare sector in our commitment and determination to improve the health and welfare of animals.
“We continue to work with horse owners and communities to improve the lives of many equines. Through this report we can bring focus to some of the issues that we see on a daily basis in our rescue and welfare work and the horses we take into our care. We hope that by speaking with a united voice we can improve the lives of horses everywhere and work to prevent welfare issues arising.”
The coalition includes Animal Aid, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Blue Cross, Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys, Cats Protection, Compassion in World Farming, Dogs Trust, Horse Trust, HSI, IFAW, League Against Cruel Sports, Mare and Foal Sanctuary, PETA, PDSA, Redwings, RSPCA, SPANA, Scottish SPCA, World Horse Welfare and World Animal Protection.
