Drinking coffee has been proven to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes type 2 as well as boost mental performance.

In June 2019, Seven Districts Coffee, a Lincolnshire based specialty coffee roasting company undertook research into what the health benefits of drinking coffee are. Being a coffee roasting company, they want to be on the forefront of education and insight.

Among the top health risks which coffee is known to reduce the effect of are: diabetes type 2, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and mental performance. Coffee is more than a caffeine delivery system. Coffee has more than 1,000 different compounds, including organic acids, sugars, amino acids and fatty acids which have been proven to help reduce the risk of certain health issues.

The Specialty Coffee Association have reported a staggering 2-10% of the European and American population who are over the age of 65 years old are said to be affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, around 3% of people ages over 65 in the US are affected by Parkinson’s disease. Worryingly, these numbers are predicted to be on the rise. Which bodes the question, what can help prevent the risk?

In order to reduce the risk of diabetes type 2, Polyphenal, magnesium and chromium can all be found within coffee. These properties have been found to help lower the rates of having type 2 diabetes. The way in which these properties are work is that they improve insulin sensitivity which helps offset the opposite effects of caffeine.

Among the health issues which coffee is known to help remediate, it can also be found to help boost mental performance, meaning the benefits of coffee become widely accessible. The way in which coffee boosts mental performance is from blocking Adenosine. Blocking this chemical wards off tired sensations which naturally hinder attention and cognitive performance. The additional effect which caffeine is known for, and many will be able to relate to, is that it’s known to elevate the mood of coffee drinkers, although some believe this results in withdrawal symptoms.

The research which has been carried out isn’t related specifically to ‘specialty coffee’ or any other specific types of coffee roasts. It is also important that when talking about coffee and the health benefits of drinking coffee has, the research relates to brewed, black coffee with no milk, cream or sugar added to the hot drink. As an industry, it’s important we push researchers in a new direction, one where health professionals are more educated about the specific products they are investigating, so that we can have a clearer understanding.
