Lincoln firm starts works on the major extension to Milton Keynes Academy

Leading construction firm Gelder Group has announced that works have commenced on the major extension to Milton Keynes Academy in Buckinghamshire, which will introduce new state-of-the-art learning and social facilities.

The £2.4m extension, which is due for completion in September this year, will provide students with a new 470 sq m science block and a 650 sq m dining block that will seat more than 340 students at one time, as well as a new reception area and gym, which can be used by students during and outside of curriculum time.

The new science block will introduce four new science laboratories for the Academy’s 1,250 students, aged between 11 and 18, to help develop their scientific skills.

Lincoln-based Gelder Group was appointed by Milton Keynes Academy to deliver the new facilities alongside Nottingham-based CBP Architects.

Contracts manager at Gelder Group, Paul Massam, said: “We are very pleased to be working on the extension of Milton Keynes Academy and to be providing high quality learning facilities and social spaces for its students to utilise for many years to come.

“The new blocks will be ready for the next school year and will mean students can enjoy new stimulating spaces when studying at this prestigious Academy. I’m looking forward to seeing the completed extension, which will provide a wonderful new learning environment for both students and staff.”

Principal at Milton Keynes Academy, Fiona Seddon, said: “We are happy to report that we are now in the midst of extensive building works that will enhance the already outstanding facilities that we offer with a brand-new student restaurant, an additional suite of science laboratories, as well as a new reception area and gym.

“The importance we place on the science subjects is highlighted in the significant expansion in the number of well-equipped science labs that will be available. These will ensure that students continue to receive stimulating and lively lessons that develop their scientific skills. The new restaurant will provide increased facilities for students at break and lunch times as well.

“This marks a monumental investment that will pave the way for future learners to be educated in a state-of-the-art environment. We are all watching with eager anticipation as the buildings progress.”

Multi-award-winning Gelder Group delivers projects across a range of sectors including education, health, retail, insurance, leisure, heritage and residential.
