British Chambers of Commerce’s Burdens Barometer

The British Chambers of Commerce’s Burdens Barometer has been updated from last year and the total cost of the major regulations to business approved since 1998 is now £65.99bn

The figures in the table are compiled from the Regulatory Impact Assessments (RIAs) produced by government departments and now downloaded into the British Chambers of Commerce’s RIA Database.

All government departments are required to complete RIAs that evaluate the risks, costs and benefits of any new regulatory proposal that has an impact on business.

The figures show the Government’s own estimates of the compliance costs of a series of regulations affecting business up to 1st July 2008. Half of all RIAs claim that new regulations provide benefits to businesses, consumers or the environment

However, these benefits are quantified in the minority of cases. As a result it is difficult to calculate the total value of the benefits that it is claimed justify the costs.

Online Regulation Database

The British Chambers of Commerce has launched an online database for businesses to submit examples of burdensome regulations. We will submit these case studies to the Government. The Government is committed to looking at every submission and how the costs can be reduced.

This is a real opportunity for employers to make a difference and reduce the cost and time of complying with burdensome regulations.
