This year's banquet was in aid of St Barnabas Hospice, and the race night raised a staggering £1375.00 for them. Thank you very much to everyone who attended, sponsored a race and/or placed bets. It was a really successful, fun evening, with 180 people attending. Young Chamber

The Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce calls it a 'pioneering development'.  Since its inception in 2001 Young Chamber has developed across the UK to become the most significant framework for student/business engagement. It's success lies in the fact that it is non-prescriptive, student owned and business led.

By utilising the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce network, students get a direct line of contact with business throughout Lincolnshire. The fluid nature of Young Chamber means you can become involved to whatever degree is possible given the usual time constraints.

Promote your business, meet future employees, feel good about working with young people. Get involved.

Lincolnshire Chamber Networking Lunch

On Thursday the 22nd of April, the Lincolnshire Chamber’s monthly networking lunch took place The Old Palace, located within the Cathedral quarter of Lincoln. The event began at 12:00 midday with a drinks reception of orange juice or iced water. Delegates signed in and were free to network until lunch was served. Our event sponsors, Aquila, gave an impressive presentation on their business products and services.

A two-course lunch of Cumberland pie and seasonal vegetables followed by raspberry cheesecake was served to the 48 delegates attending the event. To close the event, there was a business card draw allowing the winner to have the opportunity to give a two minute presentation to the room. On this occasion the card drawn was for Ken Hinton of Lincoln Restoration and Cleaning Services. Volcanoes and Potential Eruptions at Work

Even if you haven't been on holiday recently, you cannot have avoided the upheaval caused by the Icelandic volcano. It would appear that the worst has now passed as airports start to get back to normal; however it’s a brave employer who can predict what further volcanic activity may happen and what effects there may be on employees going on holiday abroad.

Should problems continue over the next few months, here are a few guidelines to help employers:

  • Employees who are stranded abroad and have exceeded their leave entitlement are not entitled to pay. Employers can treat this as unpaid leave. Alternatively, the employer can use their discretion to allow the employee to take this period as paid leave.
  • Employees who are unable to turn up for work due to being stranded abroad have a duty to keep their employer informed as to their whereabouts, and how they are progressing in their attempts to get home.
  • Employers cannot prevent employees from taking holiday abroad, even if the likelihood of becoming stranded appears to be high. Employees are entitled to take their leave and it is up to them where they go. However, the employer is entitled to warn their workers that they are not entitled to pay if they do get stranded overseas and do not have enough leave entitlement to cover any such period.

Used Computers Wanted

Jon Thornes, Chairman of Cool Milk, is committed to raising 1000 used computers for Hungarians in Szendrő. This action will be undertaken through the whole next month, and it is with a humble heart that he asks for your contribution to this commitment.

Jon is really determined to help them and therefore, with Cool Milk’s UK help he has already sent them 15 second hand computers free. Also, he am currently working on providing free access to the Internet by building up a wifi connection for them.

Jon is looking to donate to them used but working computer equipment such as:

  • Computer base units
  • Monitors
  • Mice; cables; modems, network cables; memory cards
  • Any other equipment that you believe may benefit the town in Hungary

Moreover, Jon would like to reassure that any donated computer will go through the deleting programme called ERASER (which is used by the US Department of Defence as a reliable file deletion control programme) to make sure that no confidential information stored on your computer will be allowed to reveal. If you decide to contribute you will not only recycle your old dinosaurs but also help others!  If you could help, please This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to send Jon an email.

Thank you in helping to make a difference!

Manufacturing Case Studies

In response to politicians’ calls for a rebalanced economy, the British Chambers of Commerce is working on a project which focuses on ‘manufacturing for export’. They will look at examples of manufacturing firms who export, as well as investigating problems companies encounter when trying to trade internationally, and what the Government could do to help them.

They are looking for manufacturing businesses to use as case studies. These could be firms who have had a successful track record in innovation and exporting new products, reinvented existing products and found new markets, or those who have been unable to export in the past few years as a result of the exchange rate or Government policies. If you would like to be considered for a case study, please This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to email Hannah Young.

Intellectual Property Scam

Trading Standards at the Lincolnshire County Council warned that unofficial Intellectual Property registration services are operating in the UK and Lincolnshire. What follows is a warning from The UK Intellectual Property Office to businesses seeking to protect their intellectual property and brand rights, as they are being increasingly targeted by certain dishonest organisations.

Once trademark and patent applications are advertised, they enter the public domain and this has provided an opportunity for organisations to write to proprietors often using names, abbreviations and emblems that appear to be official, inviting the applicants to register their trademarks and patents in various official sounding registers or publications, in return for payment of an invoice.

These are scams as the organisations are not linked to any official patent or trademark office and the services they are offering are not official services. The only offices which are able to provide legal protection for patents, designs and trademarks in the UK are the UK Intellectual Property Office, the European Patent Office, the Community Trade Mark Office (more formally known as the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation, as well as other national trade mark registries and patent offices.

If you receive any telephone calls or renewal letters, always contact the UK Intellectual Property Office to ensure you have all the information available and are paying the correct fees.
