Would you like to help the Bank of England make the right decision on interest rates for the UK? Over the past few years, the Chamber has arranged a series of roundtable discussions between members and the Bank of England’s Agent for the East Midlands, Alastair Cunningham. These roundtable business panels are invaluable for Alastair as a source of intelligence on how businesses are faring in the county. The intelligence that Alastair gathers is fed back directly to the monetary policymakers in London as part of their monthly briefing on the state of the economy, so these meetings are a good opportunity for businesses to help ensure that monetary policymakers are aware of Lincolnshire’s experiences.

At present, the Monetary Policy Committee are particularly keen to hear of business’ views of:

• Business confidence - Are you budgeting for growth or shrinkage next year? How have you positioned the business to achieve your budgets - Have you changed plans for investment, staffing or marketing in recent months, for example, as a result of recent news on fiscal policy?
• Employment plans - Are you looking to increase staffing numbers? Are there further redundancies in the offing?
• Pay - Is wage inflation accelerating? Or is profitability still too low to warrant the sort of pay awards you made prior to the recession?

These panels are invaluable for the Bank of England’s Agent as a source of intelligence on how businesses are faring in the county. This intelligence is fed back directly to the monetary policymakers in London as part of their monthly briefing on the state of the economy.
